SJB Floodlighting was appointed to deliver the specialist floodlighting installation for the new 4G Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) at Ysgol Y Creuddyn, Llandudno. The project formed part of a wider sports facility development that included the construction of a FIFA Quality standard football pitch, changing facilities and associated infrastructure. The floodlighting installation was designed to provide a professional-standard playing environment while meeting stringent planning, environmental and sporting requirements.

The Challenge

The project required a lighting solution capable of:

  • Achieving a maintained illumination level of 250 lux with a minimum 0.6 uniformity ratio suitable for competitive football.

  • Minimising glare and obtrusive light to neighbouring properties.

  • Complying with:

    • FIFA Class II lighting requirements

    • BS EN 12193 Sports Lighting

    • FAW Tier 3 Club Licensing Regulations

    • ILP Guidance Notes for the Reduction of Obtrusive Light.

The installation also needed to integrate with works being carried out by multiple contractors on a live school site, requiring careful planning, coordination and strict health and safety procedures.

SJB Floodlighting Solution

SJB designed and supplied a complete LED floodlighting system incorporating:

  • Six 14-metre base-hinged Christy lighting columns.

  • Twelve Gigatera flat-glass ultra-low glare LED floodlights.

  • Weatherproof feeder pillar housing the local switchgear.

  • Integrated time clock to satisfy planning conditions.

  • Remote wireless lighting control.

The base-hinged column system was selected to provide safe future maintenance while delivering excellent long-term reliability.

Scope of Works

The project included:

  • Pre-construction planning and mobilisation

  • Supply of specialist LED sports lighting equipment

  • Delivery of columns and floodlights

  • Installation of all lighting columns

  • Installation of feeder pillar and electrical switchgear

  • Cable installation to each lighting column

  • Testing and commissioning

  • Recording of lighting performance

  • Production of operation and maintenance documentation.

Engineering Excellence

Every aspect of the installation was designed to meet demanding sports lighting standards.

Following installation SJB:

  • Tested the electrical installation in accordance with BS7671

  • Measured and verified illumination levels

  • Fine-tuned floodlight aiming where necessary

  • Produced drawings and commissioning documentation

  • Delivered operational training for the client.

Safety & Quality

As with every SJB project, quality and safety were central to delivery.

The installation was completed by:

  • NICEIC Approved Contractors

  • CHAS Accredited operatives

  • SafeContractor Approved teams

  • JIB registered electricians

  • 18th Edition qualified engineers

  • DBS-checked personnel for working within school environments.

The Result

The completed installation provides:

  • Professional-quality LED sports lighting

  • Uniform illumination across the entire playing surface

  • Reduced energy consumption through modern LED technology

  • Low glare for players, spectators and nearby residents

  • Reliable switching and electrical protection

  • A safe, high-quality facility capable of supporting football throughout the year.

The new floodlighting system enables Ysgol Y Creuddyn to maximise pitch usage during evenings and throughout the winter months, creating a valuable sporting asset for both the school and wider community.
