Case Study - Langley School – Sports Floodlighting, Norwich
Updated: Sep 29
Project overview - New LED floodlighting installation for hockey and football facilities
Langley School is an established independent school based in Taverham, Norwich, with extensive sports facilities supporting a wide range of activities. With outdoor sport forming an important part of school life, providing high-quality sports facilities that can be used throughout the year is an important consideration.
SJB Floodlighting was appointed to deliver a new LED floodlighting installation for the school’s hockey training area and small grass football pitch, providing improved illumination for evening training and sporting activities.
The Project
SJB Floodlighting designed and installed a complete sports floodlighting system at Langley School, providing dedicated lighting for both the hockey training area and small grass football pitch.
The installation incorporated five new 10-metre root-mounted columns, providing the required mounting height for the sports floodlights and allowing the lighting to be accurately positioned across the playing areas.
The project included the floodlighting equipment, columns, electrical infrastructure, switchgear, cabling, controls, testing and commissioning.
Philips LED Floodlighting
The new installation uses Philips LED floodlighting technology, providing a modern and efficient solution for the school’s sports facilities.
The system comprises:
* 4 × Philips BVP 528 A35 MNB LO asymmetric LED floodlights serving the hockey area
* 2 × Philips BVP 528 A35 WNB LO LED floodlights serving the grass football area
* 2700K colour temperature, providing a warmer white light
* Dedicated lighting to the individual sports areas
The asymmetric floodlights allow the light to be accurately distributed across the playing areas, helping to achieve the required illumination and uniformity while limiting unnecessary light outside the areas being illuminated.
Lighting Performance
The completed installation provides lighting designed around the requirements of the different sporting activities taking place at the school.
For the hockey, tennis and netball training area, the lighting design provides:
≥200 lux maintained average illumination
≥0.70 uniformity
For the short-sided football area, the design provides:
≥120 lux maintained average illumination
≥0.60 uniformity
The two areas are controlled separately, allowing the school to operate the lighting required for each individual activity without having to illuminate the entire facility.
New Electrical Infrastructure
As part of the project, SJB Floodlighting installed the electrical infrastructure required to operate and control the new floodlighting system.
This included a new pitch-side feeder pillar, local protection and switching equipment and appropriately sized XLPE/SWA/PVC cabling between the electrical equipment and the new lighting columns.
The installation provides a dedicated and robust electrical supply to the new sports lighting system.
Testing & Commissioning
Following completion of the installation, SJB Floodlighting carried out the necessary electrical testing and commissioning.
The floodlighting was checked to ensure the installation was operating correctly and that the required illumination levels were achieved. Lighting levels were measured and recorded, with the floodlights accurately aimed to achieve the required distribution across the playing areas.
The completed installation was tested in accordance with BS 7671, with the relevant project documentation provided as part of the handover.
Working in a School Environment
The project was delivered with consideration for the requirements of working within an operational school environment.
SJB Floodlighting’s experienced installation team includes appropriately qualified electrical operatives, CSCS-qualified personnel and operatives trained in the use of access equipment and raising and lowering lighting columns.
SJB Floodlighting is also an NICEIC-approved contractor for street and exterior lighting installations and maintenance.
A Complete Sports Floodlighting Solution
The completed Langley School project provides the school with a modern LED floodlighting system capable of supporting multiple sporting activities throughout the year.
The combination of Philips LED technology, new 10-metre columns, dedicated lighting zones, new electrical infrastructure and amenity lighting provides a complete solution designed specifically around the school’s requirements.
