Brooksbank School – LED Floodlighting Refurbishment

Project Overview

The Brooksbank School is a secondary school and sixth form located in Elland, West Yorkshire. The school places a strong emphasis on academic achievement, personal development and providing opportunities for students to develop outside the classroom.

Sport is an important part of the school’s facilities, with the site providing a range of sporting opportunities for students and the wider community. The school’s 3G pitch provides a dedicated facility for football and other sporting activities.

SJB Floodlighting were appointed to refurbish the existing floodlighting system serving the school’s 3G pitch, replacing the existing metal halide floodlights with a modern LED solution.

The Project

The existing installation comprised 12 metal halide floodlights mounted on the existing columns. As part of the refurbishment, the existing floodlights and operating equipment were removed and replaced with a new LED floodlighting system.

The new installation was designed to provide an illumination level of 200 lux across the 3G pitch.

SJB Floodlighting supplied and installed eight Philips Lighting BVP 528 T35 A35-NB 3.5 Gen LED floodlights. The floodlights were accurately aimed in accordance with the computer-generated lighting design to provide the required level of illumination across the playing surface.

Installation Works

The existing columns and crossarms were retained as part of the refurbishment, reducing the extent of replacement works required.

SJB Floodlighting used specialist raising and lowering equipment to safely access the floodlights at the top of the existing columns. The existing operating equipment was removed and new LED drivers were installed, with their location determined by the configuration and loading requirements of each column.

New flexible cables were installed between the column base compartments and the new floodlights, and modifications were made to the local switchgear to accommodate the new LED system.

Testing & Commissioning

Each column was function tested following installation before the complete floodlighting system was commissioned.

The finished installation was tested in accordance with BS 7671, with certification provided on completion. An after-dark illumination test was also carried out to verify the performance of the system against the lighting design.

Operational instructions and an operating manual were provided to the school’s staff.

The Result

The completed refurbishment has provided Brooksbank School with a modern LED floodlighting system for its 3G pitch, replacing the previous metal halide technology.

The new LED system provides consistent illumination across the playing surface while offering the benefits of modern LED technology, including improved energy efficiency, reduced maintenance requirements and longer equipment life.

The Philips Lighting LED floodlights installed as part of the project are supported by a 10-year manufacturer’s guarantee, providing additional long-term assurance for the school.

The project demonstrates SJB Floodlighting’s ability to modernise existing sports lighting installations while making use of suitable existing infrastructure, delivering a professionally designed, installed and commissioned LED floodlighting system.
