Upgrading Hendon FC's Floodlighting with Energy-Efficient LED Technology

SJB Floodlighting was appointed to upgrade the floodlighting system at Hendon Football Club, replacing the existing metal halide installation with a modern, energy-efficient LED solution designed to improve lighting performance while significantly reducing energy consumption.

The project focused on delivering a high-quality lighting system suitable for football while making use of the existing infrastructure wherever possible, providing the club with a cost-effective and sustainable upgrade.

The Challenge

The existing floodlighting installation consisted of 18 metal halide floodlights with a total connected load of 37.8kW. While the existing columns and electrical infrastructure remained suitable for reuse, the lighting system was becoming increasingly inefficient and expensive to operate.

The objective was to:

  • Reduce energy consumption

  • Improve lighting quality

  • Extend the lifespan of the installation

  • Minimise disruption to the club

  • Retain existing infrastructure where practical

Our Solution

Following a detailed site survey and lighting assessment, SJB Floodlighting designed a new LED floodlighting scheme using the latest Philips LED technology.

Using verified lighting calculations produced through industry-standard lighting design software, we developed a solution that achieved the required lighting levels for football while significantly improving energy efficiency.

The upgrade included:

  • Removal of the existing 18 metal halide floodlights

  • Reuse of the existing floodlighting columns and crossarms (following structural checks)

  • Installation of 12 new Philips LED floodlights

  • New LED drivers and associated electrical equipment

  • New flexible cabling between drivers and luminaires

  • Alterations to local switchgear where required

  • Full system commissioning

  • Electrical testing to BS 7671

  • Post-installation lux testing and performance report

  • Operator training and handover documentation

Significant Energy Savings

One of the biggest benefits of the project was the dramatic reduction in power consumption.

The original metal halide installation required:

37.8kW

Following the LED upgrade, the new installation reduced this to:

14.07kW

This represents approximately a 63% reduction in connected electrical load, helping Hendon FC significantly reduce ongoing energy costs while lowering its environmental impact.

Quality You Can Rely On

To ensure long-term reliability, SJB Floodlighting specified Philips LED floodlights, backed by a 10-year manufacturer's guarantee.

The lighting design was produced using open-access lighting calculation software, allowing independent verification of the lighting performance rather than relying solely on visual layouts.

Delivering the Project Safely

As with every SJB Floodlighting project, all installation work was completed by fully qualified engineers experienced in sports floodlighting installations.

Our team included:

  • NICEIC Approved Contractors

  • CHAS Accredited

  • SafeContractor Approved

  • CSCS-certified operatives

  • 18th Edition qualified electricians

  • Engineers trained in raise-and-lower floodlighting column systems

  • Enhanced DBS-checked personnel

The Result

The completed LED floodlighting upgrade provides Hendon FC with a modern lighting system that delivers:

  • Improved playing visibility

  • Reduced energy consumption

  • Lower maintenance requirements

  • Long-term reliability

  • High-quality LED performance

  • Future-ready floodlighting technology

By retaining suitable elements of the existing infrastructure while introducing modern LED technology, the project delivered a cost-effective upgrade that will benefit the club for many years.
