Hingham Tennis Club – LED Floodlighting Refurbishment

Project Overview

SJB Floodlighting completed an LED floodlighting refurbishment at Hingham Tennis Club in Norfolk, upgrading the lighting serving the club’s two outdoor tennis courts.

Hingham Tennis Club is a community-focused tennis club offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. The club provides a mixture of social and competitive tennis, alongside coaching and activities for both adults and juniors.

The two outdoor courts provide an important local sporting facility, allowing members to play throughout the year. Reliable floodlighting is therefore essential for extending court use into the evenings and during the darker months.

Existing Floodlighting

The project involved replacing the existing eight metal halide floodlights serving the two courts.

The existing lighting equipment and associated operating gear were removed as part of the refurbishment, with the existing columns retained and adapted where necessary to accommodate the new LED fittings.

The upgrade was designed around a 400-lux lighting scheme, providing the required illumination for the tennis courts.

LED Floodlighting Installation

SJB Floodlighting installed four Philips Lighting BVP 528 T45 A55-WB+LT LED floodlights onto the existing columns.

The new fittings were positioned and aimed in accordance with the computer-generated lighting design, ensuring the available light was distributed appropriately across the courts.

New LED drivers and flexible cables were installed, while the existing cabling, switchgear infrastructure and controls were reused where suitable. The local switchgear within the mains room was also altered to suit the new LED installation.

Improved Court Lighting

The LED refurbishment provides Hingham Tennis Club with a modern lighting solution designed specifically around the requirements of its tennis courts.

LED technology provides a modern alternative to the previous metal halide system, with the new fittings offering controlled illumination across the playing areas.

The upgraded system provides the club with dependable floodlighting to support evening tennis and maximise the use of the courts throughout the year.

Specialist Installation & Commissioning

SJB Floodlighting used a suitable Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) to safely access the floodlights at the top of the existing columns.

Each column was function tested following installation before the complete system was tested and commissioned. An after-dark illumination test was also undertaken, with a report provided to confirm the lighting performance.

The completed installation was tested in accordance with BS 7671, with operational instructions and an operating manual provided to the club at handover.

The completed LED refurbishment gives Hingham Tennis Club a modern and dependable floodlighting system while making effective use of the existing columns and infrastructure.

The upgrade provides the club with improved lighting for its courts and a more modern, efficient solution for supporting its continued use by members, coaches and players.
