Project Overview

SJB Floodlighting Ltd carried out a refurbishment of the existing floodlighting system at Langley Park School for Girls in Beckenham, replacing the existing metal halide floodlights with a modern LED lighting solution.

Langley Park School for Girls is a high-achieving, non-selective girls’ comprehensive school in Beckenham, with a mixed Sixth Form. The school places a strong emphasis on academic achievement alongside wider opportunities for students, including a broad range of extracurricular and sporting activities.

The project provided an opportunity to modernise the school’s hockey pitch floodlighting while making use of the existing floodlighting infrastructure wherever practical.

The proposed system was designed around a 350-lux lighting scheme, providing an efficient and modern solution for the hockey pitch.


LED Floodlighting Upgrade

The existing installation comprised 20 metal halide floodlights, which were replaced with 12 Philips BVP 528 LED floodlights.

The new LED luminaires were installed onto the existing floodlighting columns, with the column heights adjusted where necessary to accommodate the new floodlight head loads.

The floodlights were positioned and aimed in accordance with the project’s computer lighting design to provide the required distribution of illumination across the hockey pitch.


Significant Energy Reduction

A key benefit of the LED refurbishment was the substantial reduction in electrical energy consumption.

The existing floodlighting system consumed approximately 42.38kW of direct energy, while the new LED design reduced this to approximately 18.07kW.

This represents a reduction of approximately 24.31kW, or 57%, providing a significant improvement in energy efficiency.

Further operational savings are possible because LED floodlights provide instant on/off operation, eliminating the warm-up period associated with the previous metal halide lighting.

Where there are breaks between bookings, the floodlights can also be switched off rather than remaining operational.


Reusing the Existing Infrastructure

Rather than replacing the complete floodlighting installation, the refurbishment was designed to make use of the school’s existing infrastructure wherever suitable.

The existing columns were retained, with their suitability for the new LED floodlights taken into consideration.

Existing cabling, switchgear infrastructure and controls could also be reused where appropriate and subject to satisfactory testing.

This approach provided a practical way of modernising the lighting system while limiting the extent of infrastructure replacement.


New LED Control Gear and Cabling

As part of the refurbishment, the existing floodlight operating equipment was removed and replaced with new LED control gear.

New flexible cables were installed between the column base compartments and the replacement LED floodlights.

The local switchgear within the column base cabinets was also altered as necessary to accommodate the new LED system.


Safe Access and Installation

SJB Floodlighting used specialist equipment and trained operatives to safely access the floodlights at the top of the existing columns.

Depending on the requirements of each column and site conditions, access was achieved using specialist raise-and-lower equipment or a mobile elevated work platform.

The existing metal halide floodlights and redundant operating equipment were removed as part of the refurbishment.


Testing and Commissioning

Following installation, each column was function tested to ensure correct operation of the new LED floodlights.

Once the installation was complete, the full system was tested and commissioned.

An illumination test was carried out after dark, with the results recorded in a lighting report.

The electrical installation was also tested in accordance with BS 7671, with the appropriate certification provided.

Operational instructions and an operating manual were provided for the school’s staff.

The refurbishment transformed the school’s existing metal halide floodlighting system into a modern LED sports lighting solution.

By replacing the older, higher-energy floodlights with efficient LED technology while retaining the existing columns and suitable infrastructure, the project provided a practical route to improving the hockey pitch lighting and significantly reducing energy consumption.
