Project Overview
SJB Floodlighting completed the installation of a specialist Spiideo S-Line Wide sports camera system at Sedbergh School, providing an advanced video capture solution for the school’s hockey facilities.
The project involved installing a dedicated camera mounting column, specialist mounting equipment and the associated data infrastructure required to provide a reliable sports video system.
The camera was positioned within the spectator area between the school’s two pitches, aligned with the halfway line and directed towards Pitch 1. This elevated viewpoint provides extensive coverage across the playing surface, making it well suited to capturing the movement and action across the pitch.
The Challenge
Installing sports camera technology within an active sports facility requires more than simply mounting a camera.
The camera needed to be positioned at the correct height and location to provide effective coverage of the hockey pitch, while the supporting infrastructure needed to withstand the outdoor environment and the demands of a busy sports facility.
SJB Floodlighting therefore provided a dedicated camera mounting solution, including the column, concrete foundation, camera bracket, protective padding and data infrastructure.
The Spiideo S-Line Wide
The Spiideo S-Line Wide is a professional sports video camera system designed for automated capture across a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports.
The S-Line system provides high-resolution video capture and a wide field of view, allowing large playing areas to be captured effectively. Its rugged, weather-resistant construction makes it suitable for permanent outdoor sports installations.
The S-Line Wide is particularly suited to installations where cameras can be positioned away from the playing surface, making it an effective solution for sports facilities such as hockey pitches, training grounds and stadiums.
At Sedbergh School, the camera has been installed in an elevated position between the pitches, providing a clear viewpoint across the hockey playing area.
More Than Just a Camera
A major benefit of the Spiideo system is that it provides much more functionality than a conventional fixed sports camera.
The system can automatically capture games and training sessions, with AI technology able to follow the action without requiring a camera operator. This means matches can be recorded without someone having to manually control the camera throughout the game.
The footage can then be accessed through the Spiideo platform, allowing coaches and players to review games and training sessions from different locations and devices.
This gives the school a flexible platform for both performance analysis and sharing sporting events.
Connecting Families & Supporters
The Spiideo system also provides the potential to bring matches closer to family members and supporters who cannot attend in person.
The system can be used to live stream sporting events, giving fans, parents and alumni the opportunity to watch fixtures remotely on devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers.
For a school such as Sedbergh, this can provide an important connection between the school’s sporting programme and parents or relatives who are unable to travel to watch a fixture.
A parent could therefore have the opportunity to watch their child’s match remotely, rather than having to be physically present at the school.
Automated Recording & Analysis
For coaches and players, the system provides a valuable performance analysis tool.
Games and training sessions can be recorded and reviewed after the event, allowing coaches to examine tactics, player positioning and key moments in greater detail.
The platform also provides tools for creating and sharing clips, making it possible to highlight particular moments from a match and use them for coaching and player development.
The result is a system that can support both live viewing and longer-term sporting development.
Specialist Camera Mounting
SJB Floodlighting installed a dedicated tilt-down camera column to provide a secure and maintainable mounting point for the Spiideo system.
The column was installed onto a purpose-built concrete foundation and fitted with impact protection around its lower section to suit the sports environment.
The camera was mounted using the specified camera mounting bracket and secured using stainless-steel and anti-vibration fixings.
The tilt-down arrangement also provides a practical solution for future maintenance, allowing the camera equipment to be brought down from its elevated position when access is required.
Camera Positioning & Aiming
The camera was installed within the spectator area between the two hockey pitches, positioned as close to the perimeter fencing as practical and aligned with the halfway line.
The camera was then aimed towards Pitch 1 to provide the required coverage of the playing surface.
The elevated central position provides an effective viewpoint across the pitch while keeping the camera installation outside the main playing area.
Data & Network Infrastructure
SJB Floodlighting also installed the infrastructure required to connect the sports camera back to the school’s IT network.
This included external-grade Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cabling, with the system connected back to the IT room. Existing underground ducting was utilised wherever possible, with additional underground ducting and protective conduit installed where required.
The network infrastructure provides the camera with both data connectivity and power, creating a streamlined connection between the camera installation and the school’s IT network.
A Complete Sports Technology Installation
The project demonstrates the importance of combining specialist sports technology with suitable physical infrastructure.
SJB Floodlighting provided the installation infrastructure around the Spiideo system, from the concrete foundation and specialist camera column through to camera mounting, network cabling and commissioning.
This ensured the camera could be installed at the required position while providing a robust and maintainable solution suitable for an outdoor hockey facility.
Testing & Commissioning
Following installation, the camera system was set up, aimed and commissioned to ensure the equipment and associated infrastructure were operating correctly.
The camera position and view were checked during commissioning to ensure the required areas of the playing surface were captured.
Project Result
The completed installation provides Sedbergh School with a dedicated Spiideo S-Line Wide sports camera system, mounted in an elevated position overlooking the hockey pitch.
The combination of a purpose-built camera column, robust mounting arrangement and dedicated network infrastructure provides a professional solution for sports video capture.
The system gives the school the ability to record, analyse and share hockey matches and training sessions, while providing the potential to live stream fixtures to parents, supporters and alumni who cannot attend in person.
For coaches, the system provides an additional tool for performance analysis and player development. For families, it creates an opportunity to remain connected with school sport remotely.
