Worth School
Worth School is an independent Catholic, co-educational boarding and day school located at Paddockhurst Road in Turners Hill, West Sussex. The School is set within approximately 500 acres of countryside and has a long Benedictine heritage, with its senior school established in 1959. Today, Worth provides education for boys and girls across boarding and day provision, combining academic education with an extensive programme of sport and co-curricular activities.
Sport forms an important part of life at Worth, with pupils able to participate in a wide range of sports including hockey, rugby, football, cricket, tennis, netball and athletics. The School has extensive sporting facilities, providing pupils with opportunities to train and compete throughout the academic year.
Hockey is particularly well established at Worth, with the School providing opportunities for both boys and girls to train and compete at a high level.
The Project
SJB Floodlighting completed a comprehensive LED floodlighting refurbishment of the hockey pitch at Worth School.
The project involved upgrading the existing metal halide floodlighting system to a modern LED solution, improving the quality, efficiency and reliability of the lighting while making use of the existing column and electrical infrastructure where appropriate.
The completed lighting installation was designed specifically for hockey, providing a maintained average horizontal illumination of 350 lux with a uniformity of at least 0.7 across the playing surface.
LED Floodlighting Upgrade
The existing 16 metal halide floodlights were removed and replaced with 12 Philips Lighting BVP 528 LED floodlights.
The new LED luminaires provide high-quality and consistent illumination across the hockey pitch, with each floodlight carefully aimed in accordance with the computer-generated lighting design.
New LED operating equipment and associated cabling were installed as part of the refurbishment, while the existing columns, cabling infrastructure, switchgear and controls were reused where appropriate.
The upgrade has provided Worth School with a modern LED floodlighting system that offers improved lighting performance while reducing the reliance on the older metal halide technology.
Testing & Commissioning
Following installation, SJB fully tested and commissioned the floodlighting system.
An after-dark illumination test was undertaken to verify the performance of the completed installation against the lighting design, ensuring the required illumination and uniformity were achieved across the pitch.
The electrical installation was tested in accordance with BS 7671, with the appropriate certification provided on completion.
SJB also provided operational instruction to the school’s staff, ensuring they were familiar with the operation of the new floodlighting system.
A Professional Approach
SJB Floodlighting provides specialist sports floodlighting installation and refurbishment services for schools, sports clubs and other sporting facilities.
For Worth School, the project combined specialist LED floodlighting design with experienced electrical installation and safe access to the existing floodlighting columns.
SJB’s site operatives are trained in the use of specialist column raising and lowering equipment. SJB operates as a NICEIC-approved electrical contractor and has achieved acceptance to the CHAS and SafeContractor schemes. Site personnel hold the relevant CSCS qualifications, with enhanced DBS checks undertaken for operatives working in environments around children and young people.
The Result
The completed LED refurbishment has provided Worth School with a modern, efficient and reliable sports floodlighting system designed specifically around the requirements of its hockey facility.
The installation delivers consistent, high-quality illumination across the playing surface, enabling the pitch to be used effectively for training and competitive hockey while providing a significant upgrade from the previous metal halide system.
