Delivering a high-performance LED floodlighting system that extends safe community use while protecting the surrounding environment.

The Project

When Bendcrete Leisure Ltd was appointed to construct the new skatepark at Maldon Promenade Park, SJB Floodlighting was selected to design and install a lighting solution that would allow the facility to be enjoyed throughout the year, even during the darker months.

Working alongside the principal contractor and Maldon District Council, our brief was to provide professional-quality illumination while ensuring the installation met strict planning and environmental requirements.

The Challenge

Lighting a public skatepark presents unique challenges.

The installation needed to:

  • Deliver consistent, high-quality illumination across the skating area.

  • Provide a safe environment for users of all ages.

  • Minimise light spill into neighbouring parkland.

  • Meet biodiversity planning conditions protecting local wildlife.

  • Be robust enough to withstand years of public use with minimal maintenance.

The project also required careful coordination with other contractors during construction to ensure the lighting infrastructure was completed safely and on programme.

Our Solution

Following a detailed lighting design, SJB Floodlighting supplied and installed a complete LED floodlighting system comprising:

  • Six 8-metre galvanised steel lighting columns

  • Six Philips high-efficiency LED floodlights

  • Underground power distribution cabling

  • Time-controlled switching and user controls

  • Full testing, commissioning and certification

Designed to achieve approximately 100 lux average illumination with excellent uniformity, the finished installation provides bright, even lighting across the entire skatepark while avoiding excessive glare.

Protecting the Environment

One of the most important aspects of this project was ensuring the lighting protected the surrounding natural environment.

Working alongside the planning requirements, the lighting design incorporated:

  • Carefully directed optics

  • Warm colour temperature LED luminaires

  • Controlled lighting levels

  • Automatic switch-off controls to reduce unnecessary operation

Following review by Place Services Ecology, Maldon District Council confirmed that the submitted lighting strategy successfully satisfied the biodiversity planning condition, allowing the development to proceed.

The Result

The completed floodlighting system has transformed the new skatepark into a facility that can be safely enjoyed long after daylight hours.

The installation now delivers:

✔ Professional-quality LED lighting

✔ Improved public safety

✔ Reduced energy consumption

✔ Lower long-term maintenance costs

✔ Compliance with ecological planning requirements

✔ A reliable lighting system designed for years of service
